We have one of the top platforms for cataract surgery in the world – the Infinity and also the DORC system, which makes it possible to perform surgery with incisions of 3mm or less, making the procedure sutureless, with faster and better visual outcomes after surgery. We also have facility for performing surgery under general anesthesia, making it possible for performing pediatric cataract surgeries too.

We have a vast range of intraocular lenses available, which can be tailored according the need of the patient. We also offer toric IOLs to correct astigmatism, multifocal IOLs which can correct near and distance vision to give total freedom from spectacles after cataract surgery. Phakic IOLs are also performed for correction of high refractive errors in patients for whom LASIK is not a safe option.

Precise IOL power calculation is as important as the surgery itself to provide good vision. We have immersion biometry and good corneal topographer (Pentacam) to minimize errors in IOL calculation.

2. Is surgery the only treatment for cataract?
Very early stages of cataract can be treated with glasses, but with progression of cataract, surgery is the only option available.

3. What are the causes of cataract?
Ageing is the most common cause of cataract. Trauma, diabetes, intraocular inflammation, steroid intake are a few of the other causes of cataract.

4. What are the symptoms of cataract?
Decreased vision which is gradually progressive is the most common symptom. Frequent change in glasses, and very rarely, in complicated cataract, pain and red eye can also be present.

5. What are the complications of cataract?
Vision progressively decreases till only light perception remains. Advanced stages can lead to increased pressure in the eye and a condition called glaucoma, where the nerve of the eye gets damaged, leading to irreversible loss of vision.

6. What is the basic technique of cataract surgery?
Sutureless cataract surgery is the standard of care which is accepted universally. With the advanced technology available today, Phacoemulsification has become the most frequently performed surgery, where cataract can be removed from incisions less than 3 mm, by breaking the cataract using ultrasound energy, and a foldable intraocular lens is implanted into the bag which had the natural lens.

7. What are the types of intraocular lenses available?
Monofocal IOLs can correct distance vision only, and near vision spectacles will be required after surgery.

Toric IOLs can correct pre-existing astigmatism also.

Multifocal IOLs can correct distance and near vision after surgery, and patient can be totally spectacle free after surgery.

8. What are the pre-operative investigations required?
Vision testing, detailed eye examination, including dilated evaluation is performed in the OPD. After confirming the diagnosis of cataract, IOL power calculation, blood pressure, blood sugar and ECG are routinely performed in all patients. Other investigations may be advised, which are tailored according to the systemic complaints of the patients.

9. What happens on the day of the surgery?
Cataract surgery is a day care procedure – meaning overnight admission in the hospital is not needed. Patient is admitted in the ward, BP and blood sugar is tested, the eye for surgery is dilated. Anesthetist evaluates the patient prior to surgery. A small injection may be required for local anesthesia. After surgery, patient is discharged home.

10. What are the restrictions to be followed after surgery?
